Website Traffic - 3 Tips To Higher Quality Traffic

Website traffic. Everyone wants more of it, and, especially with the wailing and gnashing of teeth following Google's recent announcements, it seems like people are both willing to do anything to get it... but unsure of exactly what is going to work.

The truth is, getting website traffic isn't the be-all and end-all of the problem. True story: some while ago one of my pages got a mention on StumbleUpon and I had a massive surge in traffic.

But I didn't get any optins and so that traffic ultimately wasn't worth much to me.

Moral of the story?

It's not how much you get... it's how good it is.

In other words, it's better to have a slow and steady stream of highly qualified visitors than it is to have a mass of unwashed wannabes and looky-loos.

So here are three tips to attracting higher quality traffic to your website:

Write relevant articles and post them. Article marketing is still one of my favourite website-traffic sources, regardless of how much people are saying it's "old fashioned" and how it "doesn't work". Because it does work. Consider: a visitor to my website coming from an article is over three and half times more likely to join my email list than a visitor from a search engine. More to the point, I write an article once, and it stays there, pretty much forever. I have articles that have been up for several years and they still send me a steady stream of highly qualified traffic.
Comment on relevant blogs. No matter what niche you're in, you are going to have peers. Meaning, yours is not going to be the only blog on a topic, no matter how off-the-wall and bizarre it is. Those blog owners are going to welcome intelligent, relevant and on-topic comments and analyses of their posts from people in the same niche. That means you. You sometimes get a link back, which is nice. But more important than that, you actually get direct traffic. People see your comment, nod in agreement and click the link back to your blog and see what else you might have to say on the matter. It works. One word of caution, though: don't spam people's blogs with silly "Great post. I've bookmarked it and will be back here again" comments. You're not fooling anyone, and you'll get yourself blocked from leaving further comments on that blog forever.
And finally, if you're feeling a little braver... invest in a small ad -- literally an inch by two inches -- in an industry-relevant publication where you have just a BIG bold headline, a massive promise underneath it, and then your website address. These are sometimes called "web ads" and are a great way to drive qualified traffic from offline sources to your (obviously online) website where you can collect their details and begin a relationship with them. Ultimately, you'll sell them something.

None of this is rocket science, and all it takes is a bit of time and effort and a willingness to succeed.
