How Cartoons Can Help Not Hurt Your Site

When building a website today it is important to know how to keep readers interested and on your site for a longer period of time as Google now monitors the "Bounce rate" to rank your website. Knowing can improve this bounce rate considerably.

Everyone loves a laugh even though everyone has a different sense of humour. What appeals to one person may not appeal to another but knowing how most people will read a cartoon even though they may not find it amusing, means that having a cartoon on your site will keep them on your website for those few seconds longer.

Why readers are attracted to Cartoons

People are attracted to cartoons for a number of reasons. Whether they are controversial or depicting an actual event in pictures, they are very noticeable.

A cartoon is a visual picture of what the subject is about. Having a political cartoon relating to a subject that your website is talking about, makes a visual picture of what your text is talking about. Cartoons are often controversial and can be the very opposite, or downside, of a subject. This is why so many good cartoonists are read simply because they can stimulate debate about a subject from a humorous point of view. People tend to scan text on a webpage and having a cartoon picture will enhance this text and encourage people to read the text more fully if only to see how closely or controversially the cartoon relates to the subject under discussion. If you decide or find a cartoon that you may think is hilarious but it doesn't relate to the subject of the text on your website, then it may hurt your site if you use it because people like relevance. Anything else is a distraction and when people are looking for information on a certain subject, distractions become annoying.

Newspapers have known for many years the advantage of Cartoons:

Newspapers have used cartoons for many years to engender debate or to lampoon a subject. In fact, today there are many well-known cartoonists who have a celebrity fan base following and some people will buy a Newspaper just to read the Cartoon.

And some cartoons when well-crafted can assist in changing Presidents or Government policies.

A good example is the Watergate scandal back in 1972 which still resonates today and many of these political cartoons are now enshrined in the history of the US. And to anyone who remembers the Watergate furore, these are still amusing.

Knowing how cartoons can help and not hurt your site lies simply with relevance. Use cartoons wisely and your readers will come back for more and your 'bounce rate' will decrease.

Website cartoons when used with relevance can enhance the appeal of a website and keep your visitors reading for longer. Increasing the time a reader stays on your website will lower your bounce rate with Google and increase your Page rank.
